Introduction

In the journey of Jesus and his disciples, they crossed the sea to the country of the Gadarenes. As they disembarked from the ship, a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit met them, emerging from the tombs. This man lived amongst the tombs and was so strong that he could not be bound even with chains. Many had attempted to bind him with shackles and chains, but he broke them in pieces, and no one could subdue him.

Night and day, he was in the mountains and among the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell at his feet, crying out loudly, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me!" For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of him.

Jesus asked the spirit for its name, and it responded, "My name is Legion, for we are many." The demons begged Jesus not to send them out of the country. At that time, there was a large herd of pigs feeding nearby on the mountains. The demons begged Jesus to send them into the pigs, and he granted their request. The unclean spirits came out of the man and entered the swine, causing the herd to rush down a steep hill into the sea, drowning about two thousand pigs.

The herdsmen fled and reported the incident in the city and surrounding countryside. People came out to see what had happened, and they found Jesus and the formerly possessed man sitting peacefully, clothed, and in his right mind. The crowd was afraid and began to tell Jesus how the man had been healed and what had happened to the pigs. They pleaded with Jesus to leave their region.

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with him. However, Jesus did not allow him to accompany him; instead, He told him, "Go home to your friends and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you." The man went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus did for him, and everyone marveled.

Jesus then returned across the sea, where a great multitude gathered around him. Among them was Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, who fell at Jesus' feet, pleading for help. He said, "My little daughter lies at the point of death; come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed and live." Jesus went with him, followed by a large crowd that pressed against him.

In the crowd was a woman who had suffered for twelve years with a bleeding condition. She had endured much at the hands of many doctors and had spent all her money without improvement. Hearing about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment, believing that if she could touch even his clothes, she would be healed. Immediately, her bleeding ceased, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

Jesus, sensing that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" His disciples responded, "You see the multitude thronging you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'" Jesus looked around to see who had done this. The woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, telling him the whole truth. Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your affliction."

While he was still speaking, some arrived from Jairus' house, announcing, "Your daughter is dead; why trouble the Teacher any further?" Ignoring their report, Jesus told Jairus, "Do not be afraid; only believe." He permitted no one to accompany him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, and they went to Jairus' house.

Upon arrival, they saw a commotion with people weeping and wailing. Jesus entered and said, "Why are you making this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep." They laughed at him, but he put them all outside, took the child's father and mother and his companions, and went to where the child was. He took her by the hand and said, "Talitha, cumi," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." Immediately, the girl rose and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were astonished at her recovery. Jesus strictly charged them that no one should know this and told them to give her something to eat.
