Building the Thanator
Creating the Thanator was quite a challenge as it has various names. This remarkable creature features four limbs at the front and two at the back, which needed to be crafted using pieces from other figures. For added detail, I incorporated flexible foam and wires. The design allows for a saddle where a minifigure can be placed, testing its compatibility with the GCL proves successful!
The finished model shows buffed-up arms and detailed head features, adorned with smaller wires at the ends. I've made sure to add flexible foam to resemble features found on real creatures, similar to that of the Dilophosaurus.
Painting Process
The painting process commenced with primer 68. The initial base was a deep black color, with detailing moments that included bright colors highlighting various sections of the body. The first step involved painting the sides white to ensure that the subsequent phosphorescent “glow in the dark” paint would stand out.
Once the primer dried, a glowing base coat of yellow was applied, gradually mixing in a bit of pink to create an orange hue. Careful attention was paid to the exposed skin areas on the head, using a flesh-toned paint. The interior of the mouth was painted reddish as well as the soles of the creature's foot pads to ensure they received proper coloring.
To make the eyes pop in the dark, I painted them white before adding the yellow glow-in-the-dark paint. The detailing continued with glossy black paint for the armor and various sculpted aspects of the creature.

Assembly and Features
Moving into the assembly line, the Thanator features eight parts that were easily connected, including the connection of the lower jaw to the head. From the resulting figure, we see all limbs correctly attached. The addition of this creature, based on images from James Cameron's "Avatar," captures the essence and appearance of the Thanator accurately.
Upon closer inspection, its six limbs, peculiar exposed guns, flat tail for maneuverability, glossy dark teeth, and fan-like antennae that might aid in detecting movement become evident. These features create an ominous and captivating look.
Size Comparisons
As part of Avatar Week, we’ll examine size comparisons with other Pandora creatures, notably the Na’vi and various extinct bricks models.
- Na’vi Tribe: The Thanator stands in size comparison with Jake Sully and fellow Na’vi figures.
- Dark Horse: A six-legged creature from Pandora, it is compared directly to the Thanator.
- Tasmanian Tiger: Comparison with other extinct models.
- Saber-Tooth Cat: The majestic creature is another point of comparison.
- Undercircus: Examining size with larger predators.
- Forest Radius: Concludes our comparison with differing sizes.
- Megalania: This intricate model is compared for scale and details.
Every creature highlights ecological ties and the intricate relationships among Pandorian fauna.
Conclusion
The Thanator, known as "palulukan" by the Na’vi, is a formidable predator inhabiting Pandora's rainforest floor. It predominantly hunts at night and is territorial, representing much of the film's themes regarding nature and survival.
We hope you enjoyed this deep dive into our LEGO Thanator custom. Expect more exciting creations as Avatar Week progresses!
