Introduction
Welcome to Doctor's Homestead! My name is Daniel, and I'm Janet. Today is our two-year anniversary on YouTube. This isn't our wedding anniversary or our start of homesteading; it's purely our anniversary of sharing our journey on this platform. We'll be discussing why we started our YouTube channel, what we're all about, a little bit about our lives, and ultimately how we became Two Doctors Homestead. We hope you enjoy our story and find some inspiration in it.
Our YouTube Journey
We started this channel to share our experiences and lives with you. From chickens to homesteading projects, unscripted and one-take videos, we aim to provide an authentic look at our lives. Why "Two Doctors"? Some have noticed we don't frequently use the title "doctor". That's because we aren't living on that, and we'll delve into that, too.
Homestead Beginnings
We lived in the suburbs of Chicago eight years ago. Daniel worked in the loop while I was a suburban girl. We felt the increasing need for peace and more space, leading us to relocate. Moving, especially with kids, is challenging. We did it all for a better quality of life and to seek peace.
Relocating and Finding Our Place
Finding a house in Texas was equally challenging due to the hot market. With properties selling within hours of being listed, our options seemed limited. Eventually, we discovered our current home, which felt perfect from the pictures. Moving and setting everything up was no small feat, but we did it.
Improvements and Projects
Upon moving, our first project was a privacy fence, followed by starting an orchard, installing a French drain, creating a patio, building chicken coops, and even doing DIY garage door replacements. For us, homesteading involves constant projects.
The "Two Doctors" Part
We both hold PhDs, earned as personal achievements and for career advancement. Daniel's field requires intellectual property agreements, making it challenging to discuss work openly. Despite the effort, these educational pursuits have always opened doors for career opportunities and personal growth.
Why YouTube?
Our YouTube journey began because we thought it would be a fun way to document and share our lives. Having watched YouTube videos ourselves, we felt we could contribute something valuable, especially around homesteading and prepping.
Our Content Evolution
Initially, our content focused purely on homesteading activities. Now, we've diversified to include prepper content, which extends beyond organic homestead activities. We aim to educate, entertain, and encourage preparedness in our community.
Channel Stats and Video Insights
- Subscribers: 4,856
- Total Videos: 801
- Top View Rates: Our angle-cutting short video reached 82,918 views, while our longest video, "National Emergency Declaration: Lockdowns Coming," received 12,296 views.
Our demographics show a broad international audience, primarily men between 25-44 years.
Filming and Editing
We use a GoPro Hero 11 and a Sennheiser MKH 400 shotgun mic. Most filming occurs on weekends due to our work schedules. We try to maintain a backlog of videos but sometimes film real-time due to life's demands and exciting homestead projects.
Future Outlook
We aim to continue sharing our homesteading and prepping experiences. Though we avoid diving too deep into politics, we focus on educational and entertaining content. Our book club experiment taught us a lot, but we decided to pause it for now.
