Introduction
Welcome to the first part of our series of morning webinars highlighting new Nordic media research! I'm Mariola, Editor in Chief of Nord Media Network and co-director of Nordicom at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Nord Media Network, a digital platform for researchers interested in media studies, aims to unite Nordic researchers in the fields of media and communication. Today, we will present the special issue titled The Communicative Dynamics of AI in Datafied Societies, edited by Martina Esmay and Emma Christensen from Roskilde University.
Introduction to the Webinar
Our webinar series focuses on thematic special issues published by Nordic scientific journals, exploring emerging research questions. Today's conversation centers around the topic of AI and its implications in contemporary society, particularly how communication dynamics are affected.
Martina Esmay will open the session by presenting the special issue, followed by insights from Olivia Oliva D, an author featured in the issue. Amanda Lagerquist from Uppsala University will provide a brief commentary. We'll conclude with a Q&A session where attendees are encouraged to submit questions via chat.
Presentation of the Special Issue
Martina Esmay, an associate professor at Roskilde University, will outline the special issue's context and relevance. The articles delve into various perspectives on the role of AI in communication, reflecting notable shifts over time. The introduction emphasizes why communication scholars should engage with AI, illustrating how these technologies can alter human-machine relationships.
The special issue presents a collection of studies focusing on generative AI's policies, experiences of migrants with digital technologies, and discussions around biases in AI. The evolving nature of communication forms the backbone of these discussions.
The issue contains several articles, each exploring distinct aspects of AI in communication:
- Amanda Leist: Discusses the implications of AI entering into consciousness and ethics.
- Olivia Oliva D: Investigates Danish university policies regarding generative AI, focusing on challenges and sustainability concerns.
- Various Authors: Explore topics from AI literacy in migrant contexts to organizational analysis of algorithmic decisions.
Consequently, the issue aims not only to present research but also to prompt new dialogues and research questions in this evolving field.
Summary of Olivia Oliva D's Article
Olivia Oliva D explores Danish university policies concerning generative AI, highlighting key domains of concern such as academic integrity, legality around data, and bias within AI outputs. The study reveals a significant tension between the urge to adopt these technologies for educational purposes and the critical issues they present, such as data ownership, environmental effects, and the potential dilution of critical literacy. Ultimately, the research advocates for a reevaluation of university positions regarding generative AI, suggesting an intersection with broader educational values.
Reflecting on Amanda Lagerquist's Commentary
Amanda Lagerquist underscores the urgency of aligning educational policies with a focus on the fundamental human values integral to academia. She points out the risks posed by a neoliberal approach to education, urging a deeper exploration of the importance of maintaining critical inquiry and fostering an enriched learning environment despite technological advancements.
Future Directions
This discussion opens pathways for future research and dialogue on AI's role in education and society. The conversation will continue as more institutions grapple with the implications of AI within their frameworks.
