Tips on Script Writing for Corporate Video
Introduction
Hey, you should ask me what I'm doing.
What are you doing?
I am script writing for my video which we are going to be shooting very, very soon. I guess we haven’t done anything on script writing before—unless maybe we have and I’m just not remembering. Well then, we’re going to do today's article on script writing.
Different Approaches to Script Writing
Script writing is definitely a process, and people like to approach it in various ways. The degree to which you script can also vary significantly. For instance, some prefer using point form notes, while others, like Tim, script out every single word and try to memorize it as best as they can. There are also people who fall somewhere in between these two methods.
My Approach to Script Writing
Here’s how I usually go about script writing:
Break it into High-level Blocks: Start by identifying the major sections or high-level ideas you want to cover. In my case, I'm discussing various shots, so I list down each shot I want to talk about. These naturally become the blocks of my script.
Start Writing: Once I have these blocks laid out, I start writing, ensuring that it all flows together cohesively.
The Importance of Reading Your Script Aloud
One really important tip I learned from Casey is to read your script out loud. You might think there's no difference between reading it silently and reading it aloud, but if you're the one who will be speaking, you'll quickly spot phrases that might trip you up or sections that just don’t sound right when spoken.
Editing While Reading Aloud
During the read-aloud phase, you often find yourself making a lot of changes. I do this consistently, and so does Casey. We’ve had several instances where reading a script out loud made us realize certain parts just didn’t make sense. Therefore, always read your scripts out loud.
Conclusion
Script writing is really cool and fun. It’s a great exercise in creativity and organization, and anyone interested in making videos should just start writing scripts. Happy scriptwriting!
