Introduction
It feels incredible to be back out on the bank after some time away, and this trip finds me at my syndicate in Oxford with the sun shining. The syndicate has three lakes, and I'm currently on Unity, one that offers me the chance to hook a big fish. The biggest fish here is a lovely mid-forty ghosty, and I've come armed with a specific target in mind; the biggest ghosty I've caught to date was 34 pounds.
As I step outside of my bivvy, the heat is quite overwhelming—though it’s not boiling, the rush to set everything up has left me a bit sweaty. I've faced challenges with floating weeds in this heavily weedy lake, which forced me to keep my rods low. Having previously only fished here for a few hours a couple of months back, I spent a good hour looking for nice horizon features indicative of where fish might be. I've found my spot straight in front of a couple of tree humps about 100-110 yards away, where I uncovered a lovely seam of gravel surrounded by weed.
For my bait setup, I went heavy and big with my hook baits. I'm using balanced tiger nuts with plastic corn as toppings and a straight 16mm Krill active boilie—which is essential during this time of year in early September. I generously baited the area with a mix that includes big boilies, sweet corn, and tigers, alongside some hemp to keep the fish coming back to the spot.
The evening is coming on, the wind has died down, and after an hour or so of waiting, I still haven’t spotted a single fish show. I’ve set my rods out with a variety of rigs and kept everything organized in my swim. With the evening settling in, I decide to grab some dinner to refuel.
Morning arrives, and while it started quiet with no action throughout the night, things quickly change. I land my first catch—a stunning mirror weighing in at 31 pounds and 12 ounces, one of the more beautiful fish I've encountered around here. I quickly put the rods back out, theory being that once a disturbance has been made, I ought to draw the fish back in with more bait.
After enjoying success this morning, I opt to switch swims. I’m now targeting an area off the back of the wind where I’ve spotted activity. The change pays off as I catch another fish in quick succession—a near 30-pounder.
The filming day continues with a successful collaboration with Ed and Lewis from Cter. They’ve dropped by to shoot some content, and luck strikes again—I’m into another fish! A quick retrieve and it turns out to be a lovely 33-pound mirror. The adrenaline on these trips always keeps me buzzing.
With plenty of bites, I spend my remaining hours walking the bank, checking spots, and ensuring I maximize every opportunity that comes my way. Feeling rejuvenated and excited about the prospect of landing the big one, I've set my sights on the record-breaking ghosty common swimming somewhere in this lake.
The final moments of my trip bring yet another stunning carp, this one under 30 pounds but still an exciting catch nonetheless. As I head home, I find myself already excited about the next trip and what the future may hold.
