TOPAZ PHOTO AI and TOPAZ GIGAPIXEL AI (Upscaling and Enhancing Comparison)

Education

Introduction

Today on "The Joy of Editing," we will be comparing the upscaling and enhancing capabilities of Topaz Photo AI and the all-new Topaz Gigapixel AI Version 7. These two products offer unique features for different editing needs. While Photo AI is designed for sharpening, denoising, and upscaling, Gigapixel AI focuses solely on upscaling. Let's delve into the differences between these two Topaz products and see how they perform in an upscaling and enhancing comparison.

Interface and AI Models

Both Topaz Photo AI and Topaz Gigapixel AI have similar interfaces, but they are entirely different products. Photo AI offers six AI models, while Gigapixel AI boasts eight AI models. All six AI models found in Photo AI are also available in Gigapixel AI, with the addition of two extra models, "Lines" and "Very Compressed." It's worth noting that these two models are not available in Photo AI at the moment, but user demand may influence their inclusion in the future. Additionally, it is important to mention that the "Art CG" model in Gigapixel AI is believed to be the same as the "Graphics" model in Photo AI.

Upscaling Comparison

To demonstrate the upscaling process, we will use three images: an AI-generated image, a landscape photograph, and a portrait photo. The first step is to send the image to either Photo AI or Gigapixel AI from Photoshop. In both cases, you can use these products as standalone apps, but we will demonstrate how to work with them within Photoshop.

In Photo AI, you can launch the app by navigating to "File" > "Automate" > "Topaz Photo AI." The same process applies to Gigapixel AI. In both apps, you can select your preferred AI model and set the upscaling factor. Photo AI allows for a maximum of 6X upscaling, while Gigapixel AI offers up to 4X upscaling. After selecting the desired settings, you can compare the original image with the upscaled and enhanced version.

Results

For our AI-generated image, we used the Standard Version 2 model in both Photo AI and Gigapixel AI, applying 4X upscaling. Photo AI completed the task in 32.93 seconds, making it 5.68 seconds faster than Gigapixel AI. The landscape photograph, upscaled using the same setting, achieved similar results. Photo AI was 14.65 seconds faster than Gigapixel AI, with a save time of 52.06 seconds. The portrait photo, upscaled 6X, yielded results in under 10 seconds for both Photo AI and Gigapixel AI.

Upon inspecting the upscaled images, it becomes evident that both Photo AI and Gigapixel AI produce impressive and near-identical results. Regardless of the AI model used, the images show significant improvement with enhanced details and reduced pixelation.
