Topaz Photo AI on OLD PICTURES – WOW!
Hi everyone, Anthony Morikanti here. Those of you that follow my channel know that I've already done several videos on Topaz Labs Photo AI. As a matter of fact, I'll have a playlist of those videos linked in the description below this article. In those videos, I've used Photo AI in varying situations, but one thing I haven't tried is using Photo AI on older scanned images. I'm curious to see how Photo AI will handle the relatively low resolution of an image scan as well as the blurriness, film grain, and artifacts that happen when you scan an old photo onto your computer. So, that's what we're going to do today.
I have five different images:
- An older picture of my mom taken in the 40s at her wedding.
- An old image of my mom taken way before I was born in the 50s.
- An image of my mom and my niece taken around 1985.
- An image of my family, including my wife and three sons, taken sometime in the 90s.
I wanted to throw in a couple of color images to see how it would do on color images, hence the selection.
All five images show typical issues like blurriness, film grain, and artifacts. We will send all five of these images into Photo AI at the same time in bulk. To do this, I select the first image, hold the shift key down, click on the last one so all five are selected in the film strip, right-click on any of those in the film strip, go up to Edit In, then over and down to Topaz Photo AI. I choose to edit a copy of the photo with Lightroom adjustments because one image had a border that I cropped away.
Lightroom prepares all five images and sends them over into Photo AI. Everything in Photo AI is pretty much automatic. It initializes, detects faces, enhances the image, removes noise, and recovers faces while enhancing resolution.
First Image
This is the older picture of my mom from the 40s:
- Before Enhancement: The photo is quite blurry.
- After Enhancement: Significant improvement, noise is removed, faces are recovered, and resolution is enhanced.
Second Image
This is an image of my wife at age three with her father:
- Before and After Enhancement: Good recovery of facial features, although my wife's eyes appear a bit unnatural.
Third Image
This is my mom on the beach in Florida, around 1953:
- Before and After Enhancement: Significant resolution enhancement of a very small image. Great improvement in clarity.
Fourth Image
My mom and my niece Lisa, taken around 1985:
- Before and After Enhancement: Excellent job, great clarity and detail.
Fifth Image
My family photo taken in the 90s:
- Before and After Enhancement: Maybe a little over-smooth, but overall a great improvement from the original blurred and low-resolution image.
When you're done, you can save the enhanced images back to Adobe Lightroom Classic or any other desired application. The overall enhancement is clearly visible and helps in making the scanned images look much clearer and detailed.
In conclusion, Topaz Labs Photo AI does a remarkable job in enhancing older scanned images, making them much more presentable and shareable with family and friends. Give it a try and let me know your results in the comments below. Thank you to everyone who watches my videos, I really do appreciate it. Talk to you guys soon.
