Using AI for UX Design is Awesome - Crash Course

Howto & Style

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving world of design, AI has emerged as a powerful ally, particularly for UI/UX designers. In this article, I’ll walk you through a real project where we harness AI to perform UX research for a landing page dedicated to my wife's newly launched lactation consulting business. By the end, you'll see how to translate this research into an effective design using tools such as ChatGPT and MidJourney.

Overview of the Project

This journey begins with my wife's website, which I designed for her lactation consulting business. Her services assist mothers in overcoming breastfeeding challenges, emphasizing the need for a second landing page specifically for her online Telehealth appointments via Zoom.

Utilizing ChatGPT for UX Research

  1. Setting Up ChatGPT: To kick off our UX research, we dive into ChatGPT (chat.openai.com). Upon selecting the appropriate model, we need to set clear instructions by defining the role of the AI during this process.

  2. Identifying Target Audience: We start the research by informing ChatGPT about my wife's business and asking it to identify the target audience's demographics, psychographics, and challenges. Here’s what it revealed:

    • Demographics: Primarily women aged 20-45, located in urban and suburban regions, with a moderate to high income.
    • Psychographics: Parents valuing breastfeeding benefits and proactive in seeking support.
  3. Creating User Personas: Next, we express the request for five user personas based on the target audience. ChatGPT produces detailed profiles, including demographics, pain points, and situations, which then get logged into our Figma document for further analysis.

  4. Information Architecture: We also prompt ChatGPT to describe the information architecture of the landing page, which results in a structured outline, suggesting a clean design with sections like the header, hero section, testimonials, and FAQs.

  5. User Flow Development: Engaging with the AI further, we describe a user flow for an expecting mother who comes across an advertisement for the service. The AI provides a detailed breakdown of the actions she would take on the landing page, guiding us through scheduling her appointment.

  6. Generating Content Ideas: The next focus is on creating compelling ad copy for the hero section of the landing page. We request variations for the headline, subheadline, and call to action, allowing for specific messaging that resonates with our audience.

  7. List of Benefits: We also ask for a list of benefits that would attract clients to schedule online consultations. The AI generates insightful titles and descriptions to effectively communicate the advantages.

  8. FAQ Section Construction: Finally, we request FAQs to address common concerns that potential clients might have. This forms an important part of the information structure and helps build trust with our audience.

  9. Color Scheme Recommendations: To enhance our design, we ask ChatGPT for color scheme ideas relevant to our target demographic. The AI provides three visual palettes, drawing connections to the emotional undertones associated with each color.

Conclusion

In a relatively short timeframe, we arm ourselves with a significant amount of valuable information gathered through AI tools. This process not only streamlines research efforts but also allows for elevated design efficiencies moving forward.
