Watch Me Build a Google Ads Campaign with AI Only!
Education
Introduction
These days, when you enter Google Ads to build a new campaign, Google kindly offers help. They suggest using their AI system to create a campaign without needing any prior knowledge. This means you don’t have to worry about keyword research, ad group segmentation, or writing content for text ads. Google takes care of it for you - you just need to provide a simple prompt with your website and some text, and their AI will build a campaign.
Today, I’m exploring how far Google has come with this technology. Historically, Google’s AI didn’t do a great job generating ad content or campaign structures. However, due to intense competition, particularly from ChatGPT and OpenAI, Google has heavily invested in AI improvements. Let’s see if these efforts have paid off.
Setting Up the Campaign
To test Google’s AI, I chose Premier Vehicle Care, a local garage. I started by entering the website’s URL to see if Google could build a campaign without any prior Google Ads knowledge.
Campaign Basics:
- Create a new campaign without guidance.
- Select a “Search” campaign.
- Choose a conversion type (test conversion in this case).
- Name the campaign “Test”.
Location and Targeting Settings:
- Remove Search Partners and Display Network.
- Target a 10-mile radius around Newcastle upon Tyne.
- Select “Presence: People in or regularly in” the targeted location.
- Avoid using broad match keywords or audience segments.
Entering the Website URL:
- Input the URL for Google to scan.
- Google generates content summarizing the business's services accurately, including car servicing, body repairs, tires, MOT tests, and accident repairs.
Campaign Content Generation
Google’s AI offers the following:
- 10 keywords.
- 15 headlines.
- 4 descriptions.
- Sitelinks.
Reviewing the Generated Content
The Good:
- The AI generates a complete ad with appropriate headlines and descriptions.
- Headlines like “Car Body Shop Near You” and “Approved Repair Center” are relevant.
- Descriptions highlight the services offered, such as car servicing and using genuine manufacturer parts.
The Bad:
- The AI places everything under one ad group using broad match. This is inefficient for targeting specific services.
- The content is generic and doesn’t inspire action.
- Keywords are too broad and not segmented into relevant ad groups.
Testing Further Customization
I prompted Google to segment the services into different ad groups, but the AI couldn’t assist with this request. Attempts to generate callout assets also failed, as the AI didn’t recognize the request.
Conclusion
Google’s AI tool for building campaigns is still far from perfect. While it generates a complete ad, it lacks the ability to properly segment services into targeted ad groups. The tool’s heavy reliance on broad match keywords can lead to wasted spend and poor performance.
If you’re a new advertiser using this tool, be cautious. Despite some improvements, the system remains flawed and requires more human input to optimize the ads effectively.
If you’ve tried using this tool, share your experiences in the comments. Have you had different results or found ways to enhance the AI’s performance? Let’s discuss!
