Why Video Editing Might Be a Good Career Option In 2024

In recent years, India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in video content consumption. Thanks to platforms like Gio, people now spend anywhere between 3 to 5 hours a day scrolling through video content. This heightened demand for videos necessitates a greater supply of those capable of producing this content.

While there are numerous content creators diligently churning out videos, we've also seen an increasing number of companies stepping into video production over the last couple of years. Consequently, the demand for video editors has skyrocketed, transforming it from a niche to a highly sought-after profession.

Contrary to conventional belief, the boom in the video editing industry isn't solely attributable to the specialized skill set it requires. The primary driver behind this surge is the escalating demand for video content. Despite the high demand for video editors, we face a significant shortage of trained professionals in this field. Historically, video editing was perceived as an unglamorous job, mostly associated with Bollywood, offering limited employment opportunities. However, this perception has dramatically shifted in recent years.

A parallel can be drawn between the current demand for video editors and the surge in demand for full-stack developers in 2021. Both professions have experienced exponential growth in demand, but supply hasn't kept pace. Despite Aina, my wife, running a video editing cohort and my ability to hire talent from her program, there remains a visible shortfall of competent video editors in India.

Considering the high demand, salaries for video editors have surged, often surpassing those of traditional IT roles. For instance, employees working at companies like TCS for several years might find it disheartening to see video editors earning more. Nonetheless, this is the current reality of the job market.
