Introduction

My name is Steve R. Hawkins, an intelligence Sergeant. When I first arrived in Vietnam, I got stuck in the rear for three boring weeks, serving as an instructor for the Vietnamese Special Forces at Nha Trang. It wasn't a bad duty, really, but incredibly boring. Now, with that behind me, I'm on my way to Noi Peck, a hot camp up in the Central Highlands, and finally, I get a chance to see some action.

Journey to Noi Peck

As I caught up with another man, he introduced himself: "Name's Hornster, CJ Hornster, Weapon Specialist. Is this your first visit to Noi Peck?" "Yeah," I said. "I'm here to replace the team's intelligence Sergeant, Kia." Douglas? Poor bastard. He ran out of luck.

CJ explained that Douglas was zapped on a night patrol. They were on a night ambush, targeting some VC tax collectors. A group of local VC was stealing rice from a local village. After ambushing them with Claymores, it seemed all were wasted. However, another group came up, and a firefight ensued where Douglas got hit.

"An AK round caught him in the head. He was out of it before he even hit the deck. Man, poor bastard," CJ recounted.

Arrival at the Noi Peck Camp

"Yo, Noi Peck Camp is right ahead of us, guys. Get your stuff together. We don't want to stay any longer than we have to."

"Take care, man. Tell those REMFs at HQ to come out here and start earning their pay," said CJ as we landed.

At the camp, CJ greeted an old friend, and I was introduced to Forrest, the camp's radio operator: "Hey man, good old CJ is back. Good to see you. Who's the FMG?" "This is Hawkins, our new intelligence Sergeant. He's BCS to the camp now." "Yo, I'm DeForest, the radio operator. The captain wants to talk to you."

Inside the Camp

I observed various camp activities:

  • Troops seemed to be discussing their encounters.
  • Mechanics working on vehicles, struggling with a carburetor.
  • Soldiers expressing their frustrations.

I knew I was in for a challenging but rewarding experience.
