I built a 3-in-1 crib for our daughter in our bus conversion (MY FAVORITE PART!)

    Introduction

Today starts off in an unexpected spot: my dad's trailer, conveniently right next to our bus. The focus of this video is the dinette design, which I'll be basing on the structure of a different, albeit similar, layout in my dad’s trailer. Surprisingly, the basic construction details are quite simple. Underneath the cushions lies a straightforward 2x2 frame that supports a piece of plywood, cleverly designed to act as a storage door.

Instead of integrating a drawer as is done in the trailer, I will solely use the top for access to storage. The good part? I anticipate using leftover wood from previous projects, which has me feeling cautiously optimistic. Let's dive in and see how this goes—hopefully, I don't jinx myself by saying this should be easy!

    Building the Dinette

After a little work, the first chair is complete. While the structure is different than what I'll ultimately create, I'm pleased with its look and expected functionality. For the space where my legs go, I've decided to repurpose some leftover ceiling boards to assemble the table, which I will need to adjust for the dinette and couch configurations. So, moving forward, let's see how this assembly unfolds.

Not everything went according to plan, as I encountered an unanticipated gray plastic wall that complicated my seat design slightly. However, with some strategic adjustments, I've managed to retain functionality while accommodating the unexpected shape. Plus, the overall frame continues to take shape—before long, it transforms into a couch and bed setup.

    Adding Strength to the Structure

Working on the back wall was next. I opted for more of the ceiling boards, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their strength, considering the risk of structural sagging. This step involved some careful measurements and ensuring everything remained level. With some improvisation and a little bit of creativity, I've reinforced what I already built!

Now to build a ledge above the seat. With careful notching to fit the window studs, I hoped to create a visually appealing piece. But I also found the texture of the whitewash barn board quite pleasing—it's a fantastic compromise between the bus's gray front and the cozy wooden feel I'm working toward in the back.

Realizing the potential for additional aesthetics, I decided to cover exposed posts in the same barn board style, resulting in a rustic yet homely vibe. The plan is to integrate some wicker baskets later on, tying everything together nicely.

    The Table Installation Dilemma

The table installation loomed ahead as my next challenge. To maintain a clean look, I wanted to avoid using a vertical leg, which could block the space visually. After affixing wall brackets and ensuring everything was level and secure, I crafted additional support, addressing minor sagging concerns. Progressing into the table's installation correction, I was pleased to find my adjustments had worked effectively.

With this completed, it was finally time to shift focus toward crafting a crib from the dinette area—a unique feature I hadn't seen in other bus conversions. A blend of creativity and safety was essential.

    Creating a Custom Crib

This crib construction became particularly sentimental because it utilizes a family heirloom—a table once belonging to my grandmother, Jean Greg. This table was used to keep score during games of cribbage, and it now transforms into the centerpiece of our daughter’s space.

The crib's rail design stands tall, contributing both charm and safety. I combined dowel screws and additional hardware to ensure it wouldn't falter under load, while also making it aesthetically pleasing. I feel confident about its sturdiness—once bolted, it’s not budging!

Both my daughter and I share the same name, Jean Greg, and it feels special to have our names tied together through this project. The end result is a multifunctional piece: a couch that converts to a dinette, and a safe crib for Jean.

This project became one of my favorites not just because of the functionality of the finished product but also due to the emotional resonance of incorporating my nana's table into my daughter’s life.

As I wrap up this phase, I’m excited to document the rest of our bus conversion journey—including plumbing and other essential installations.

Thanks for joining me in this adventure; I'm thrilled with how everything turned out!
