Microsoft Copilot for Word Demonstration

[Music]

In this video, we're going to be talking about the Copilot add-on for Microsoft Word. We're using Copilot Professional here, which allows you to work with various Microsoft Office apps. One thing to note is if you have a Microsoft Office subscription, you can work with your local documents on your hard drive. Otherwise, you're limited to just documents in OneDrive online. Of course, this might change because Microsoft often updates its features.

We have a document titled "Business Security Practices for Remote Workers" stored on the local computer. It includes a table of contents divided into various sections with some graphics and a conclusion at the end.

To access Copilot from within Word, go to the Home tab and click on the Copilot icon. It will provide some suggestions such as summarizing the document, asking questions, and identifying key action points. For example, if you click on "Summarize this doc," it will reduce the content into bullet points which you can then expand or modify according to your needs.

Let's take a closer look at some of the features:

  1. Summarizing Document Sections: It summarized all categories into bullet points.
  2. Identifying Main Topics: By asking about the main topic, it identifies and provides a description based on the first sentence.
  3. Paragraph Count: It can count paragraphs accurately.
  4. Keyword Frequency: It can tell you how many times a specific word, like "password," appears in the document.
  5. Section Summarization: It can summarize specific sections, such as one about using a VPN.
  6. Image Count: It attempts to count images, but this feature may not always be accurate.

Other features include searching for related websites, voice prompts, and prompt suggestions.

Next, we move on to creating a new document using Copilot. When you start a new document, Copilot provides a prompt. You can ask it to write a detailed document, such as a two-page history of Henry Ford and the invention of the assembly line, complete with bullet points, dates, a photo, and citations.

However, it may take several minutes to generate this document. Once done, you can review, modify, or delete it. If you accept it, it converts into a regular Word document. Even after acceptance, Copilot can provide suggestions but can't directly edit the document.

If you need images, you can have Copilot suggest them, though this feature can be buggy. For example, it worked for finding pictures of the Model T car but encountered issues with Henry Ford's assembly line images.

In conclusion, while Copilot for Word has several useful features, it also has some bugs that Microsoft will hopefully address. Experimenting with different prompts can help make better use of this tool.
