Online Class: Hand Sewn Denim Greeting Cards with @TheCraftyLumberjacks | Michaels

    blog thumbnail

    Introduction

Hello everyone! We're excited to introduce a fun new project: DIY Hand Sewn Stem Stitch Cards for Fall hosted by The Crafty Lumberjacks, Dennis and Andrew. In honor of National Sewing Month, we're diving into a hands-on crafting experience that is simple and engaging, even if you're not an experienced sewer.

    Introduction to Stem Stitching

The Stem Stitch is an easy stitch to master, great for those unfamiliar with sewing, as both Dennis and Andrew demonstrated their creations confidently despite their limited experience. This handmade element gives a special touch to greeting cards, making them perfect for gifting. Furthermore, it serves as a delightful side project to engage in while enjoying your favorite shows.

Mark your calendars for the next event in October, where we will craft Vintage Retro Halloween Candles — a perfect family-friendly project for the spooky season!

    Giveaway Announcement

A special shoutout to Fisgar for supporting today’s class! At the conclusion, we run exciting giveaways featuring Fisgar products, available at Michaels or on their website. Today’s giveaway includes several sewing essentials, so be sure to stay until the end.

    Supplies Needed

Throughout the class, we utilized several essential tools from a Fisgar 62-piece Sewing Essentials Kit. This kit includes:

    • Curve pair scissors
    • Retractable measuring tape
    • Sewing needles and thread

For the project, we used tracing paper, denim fabric, and an embroidery hoop to create our cards. The denim adds durability and texture, while tracing paper helps transfer designs.

    The Sewing Process

The Stem Stitch can be initiated by making longer stitches initially and then continuing with shorter, uniform stitches along the design. It’s critical to maintain consistent length and direction for an even appearance.

Participants were encouraged to adapt their sewing techniques, especially when navigating curves. By flipping the embroidery hoop as needed, creators found it easier to keep a consistent rhythm and tension as they worked.

    Crafting the Card

The cards themselves can be made from card stock. The process begins by cutting your card to a standard size of 4.25 by 5.5 inches, folding in half to create a crisp edge. Utilizing a Fisgar paper cutter made the cutting process simple and efficient.

To enhance the aesthetic, we used a bone folder to create a polished crease and added a colorful layer of fabric as a patch on the card.

    Gifting Board and Envelope Creation

In addition to creating the greeting cards, we demonstrated how to make custom envelopes using a Fisgar Gifting Board. This versatile tool allows for creating envelopes, bows, and even boxes. Following the measurements, we cut the correct dimensions, scored the paper, and assembled the envelopes to fit our cards perfectly.

    Final Touches

Finishing touches included applying a double-sided adhesive to attach the decorative patch to the card securely. Once completed, participants were thrilled with the charming and personalized greeting cards they created.

    Conclusion

Wrap up your crafting experience with the knowledge gained from this class, and don’t forget to enter our giveaway by answering a trivia question!

We encourage you to join us for our next crafting adventure on October 14th. Happy crafting, and we hope to see you soon!
